Profile of Hofu City

Location:
Hofu City lies in the middle part of Yamaguchi Prefecture. Having been formed down the big river Saba, the city has a plain (called Hofu Plains) which is the widest in the prefecture, and faces an inland sea which forms part of the Inland Sea National Park.
The city is bordered on the north by Tokuji Town, on the east by Tokuyama City and on the west by Yamaguchi City (prefectural capital). The area is 188.59km2.

Geographical Feature:
The city is surrounded by mountains. Ohirayama Mt. (631m high) is situated on the east and Migitagadake Mt. (426m high) on the west. They soar as if they were greeting each other. Further, the first-class river Saba, which runs through the city center, gives a plain which is the widest in the prefecture. The southern part of the city faces the Sea of Suo, forming an industrial seaport.

Climate:
In summer a gentle breeze comes from the sea. In winter the passage of the breeze is obstructed by the mountains. These form the climate that is peculiar to inland-sea districts.
The minimum temperature and the maximum temperatures of the year 1995 are minus 4.1 degree Celsius and plus 35.4 degree Celsius, respectively. The average temperature and the average rainfall during the last five years are 15.5 degree Celsius and 1,695 mm, respectively.
