Resident Registration To the residents who live in Hofu over 90 days

Started on July 9, 2012, a Residence Card will be issued with the introduction of a new residency management system. The Alien Registration System is abolished.

Procedures for Residence Card

Issue of Residence Card

Who this applies to

A Residence Card will be issued to persons residing in Japan who have been given a status of residence with a period of stay of more than three months.

Place of Issue

Regional Immigration Bureau(Regional Immigration Bureau or Branch Offices: Starting July 9, 2012, a Residence Card will be issued at Narita, Haneda, Chubu and Kansai Airports to those entering Japan with a mid-to long-term resident status. However, for those entering via all other ports of entry and departure, a Residence Card will be mailed by Simple Registered Mail to the individual’s reported residing place submitted to municipal offices upon entry. )

By when must the Alien Registration Certificate be changed to the Residence Card?

 ・For a certain period, until the new Residence Card is issued, an Alien Registration Certificate will be considered equivalent to a Residence Card for the purpose of residence notification or procedures at Regional Immigration Bureau or Branch Offices. It is not necessary to immediately exchange your Alien Registration Certificate for a Residence Card.

 ・A new Residence Card will be issued at a Regional Immigration Office when permission to extend period of stay, etc., is granted.

 ・You must carry this Residence Card with you all the time.

What will be more convenient?

 Those departing Japan with a passport and Residence Card who plan to re-enter Japan within one year and before the expiration of their period of stay, will, in principle, not be required to apply for a Re-entry Permit.

 Certificates of Residence

 Foreign residents who are eligible to receive a Residence Card or Special Permanent Residence Certificate will have a Certificate of Residence made for them at the local municipality in which they live, just as is done for the Japanese.

 Notification procedures will be necessary in the following cases

 Change of address should be submitted at the Citizens Division, City Hall Building No.4 1F   (Tel: 0835-25-2162)

 ・When you move into Hofu (Moving-out notification issued at your former residence place is needed.)

 ・When you change addresses within the city(Procedure is needed at the Citizens Division.)

 ・When you move out to another city(You should request a moving-out notification at the city hall.)

For other changes ( name, nationality, status, etc. ), you should notify to Regional Immigration Bureau or branch office.

 Reissue of Residence Card

When a Residence Card is lost, you must apply for a re-issue within 14 days after you find the loss at a Regional Immigration Bureau or branch offices.

 ・Necessary documents: Passport and a copy of photograph (4.5cm×3.5cm  taken within 6 months)

 Leaving Japan  

When a foreign resident leaves Japan, his/her Residence Card must be returned at the airport or port of departure.
